Smoothies as Part of a Healthy Diet

A nutritious diet includes protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, minerals, enzymes, phytochemicals, fiber and water in proportions that promote growth and maintain healthy cells. It also includes ample quantities of vegetables and fruits. In fact, the phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables hold the key to preventing many diseases, such as cancer and heart disease, and debilitating conditions, such as asthma, arthritis and allergies.

The problem is, even the most disciplined person can find it difficult to consume the quantities of fruits and vegetables that health professionals recommend. Adding a daily smoothie—or two—to your diet is one of the easiest ways to ensure that you eat enough fruits and vegetables to promote good health. Smoothies can contribute in a significant way to ensuring a healthy diet by making it easier to consume the recommended five to eight daily servings of fruits and vegetables.

One large glass of pure, raw or lightly cooked, blended fruits or vegetables will help improve the immune system, increase energy, strengthen bones, clear skin and lower the risk of disease. For maximum benefit, it is wise to consume a wide variety of organic fruits and vegetables and include some herbs and other nutritional ingredients, such as flax seeds or sea herbs.

• Always keep fresh bananas and seasonal fruit on hand.

• Stock the cupboards and freezer with favorite ingredients.

• Teach school-age children how to use the blender safely and clean it afterward.

• Write favorite recipes and ingredient combinations on cards and keep them in a place that is easily accessible.
