Helpful Rice Cooker Tips & Tricks

Read your manufacturer's use and care manual and orient yourself with safety precautions before using your rice cooker. Bear in mind that brands do differ.

Each machine has its own unique personality, which you will get to know by experimenting with these recipes. When in doubt, refer to the manufacturer's manual.

Never immerse your machine in water. I recommend washing the rice cooker bowl by hand.

Use a long-handled wooden spoon or nonstick spatula when sautéing or stirring ingredients in the rice cooker bowl.

Spray the rice cooker bowl with nonstick cooking spray to prevent sticking, if desired.

When cooking rice, never lift the lid, as the steam will evaporate and interrupt the cooking process.

Unplug the machine from the outlet when it's not in use and before cleaning. Let it cool before putting on or taking off parts.

When using perishable ingredients, do not use the timer to instruct the machine to cook later in the day or overnight.

For a superior result, use filtered water to cook rice, grains and beans.

Position the unit away from the wall and out from under cabinets so the steam can be released freely.

Serve all recipes that call for fish, meat or vegetables immediately to prevent spoilage and refrigerate any leftovers promptly.
